Honeybees are in decline. This is a terrible crisis that threatens our food! Please help the honeybees by supporting Bee Smart.Honeybees pollinate about one-third of all the foods we eat. In the pollination process, bees fertilize flowers, which boosts seed and fruit production. Apples, blueberries, melons, tomatoes, cucumbers…farmers depend on bees to pollinate these crops and many more. But the last 50 years have seen the bee population cut in half, threatening many fruits and vegetables across the nation. From reports of insufficient honeybees for all the almond blossoms in California, to concerns of vegetable farmers in Idaho, over to farmers in Ohio worrying about the bee deficit hurting their cherry crops.
Human health is dependent on healthy bees, because healthy bees mean healthy crops for humans to consume. Some claim Einstein once said: "If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live. No more bees, no more pollination…no more men!" Whether Einstein really said that or not is in debate, but the message is an important one nonetheless.
And it's not just what humans eat—clover seed for cattle feed, for example, are dependent on none other than honeybee pollination.
Much more research needs to be done to look into the causes of disappearing bees. This is a global problem with global consequences.
Weather changes, pesticides, fungus, viruses, and even cell phone use have all been speculated as possible causes of bee decline. Whatever the cause, we need to find out so we can do something about it.
Bee Smart is a new foundation with the goal of helping humans by helping honeybees. We're raising money for a wide variety of projects—little projects, like distributing bee-friendly flower seeds to encourage native honeybee population, and big projects, like lobbying the government to research and act upon the bee crisis.
If you're unable to donate but would like to help the honeybees, try planting some bee-friendly plants in your yard, such as lavender (also smells great!), jasmine, rosemary, violets, thyme, trumpet vine, or sunflowers.
