Our high school, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to ban the distribution of free condoms. One whiney parent and the school just ends its program, with no debate, no negotiations, no room for compromises. I guarantee you we will get the debate started and make sure the school hears the voices of those that want this program to continue, but in the meantime, I am raising money to buy condoms which I will distribute myself if I have to (but I bet I can get some help).
If anyone is concerned, let me dispel a common myth: Condom availability programs DO NOT promote sexual activity. As advocatesforyouth.org points out, "A study of New York City's school condom availability program found a significant increase in condom use among sexually active students but no increase in sexual activity" (they cite: Guttmacher S, Lieberman L, Ward D, et al. Condom availability in New York City public high schools: relationships to condom use and sexual behavior. Am J Public Health 1997; 87:1427- 1433). Other studies corroborate those results. And still other studies show the success of condom availability programs—teens that are already sexually active are more likely to use a condom where there are condom availability programs.
Unfortunately, sexually transmitted diseases are increasing among teens. I don’t want to attend my high school reunion only to spend time remembering classmates that have died from AIDS. Help keep them protected! If condoms are not provided, many high school students just don't use them. They can be hard to get. As advocatesforyouth.org explains, " Adolescents face many obstacles to obtaining and using condoms. Some of these obstacles include confidentiality, cost, transportation, embarrassment, access…" Don't let lack of access be the reason someone YOU know participates in unsafe sex. Help me buy protection for our school!
