DREAMING IN AMERICAN is a feature-length documentary that focuses on the journey of one family in rural Brazil as they immigrate illegally to the northeastern US in this time of virulent xenophobia and widespread anti-immigrant sentiment.

The film gives expression to the space between dreams and reality, the interplay between the imagined America--in the minds of immigrants and citizens alike--and people's actual experiences. While essentially a documentary, one of the project's central aims is to show how the line between fiction and nonfiction is blurred. The movie shows the distinction between fantasy and reality by interspersing live-action verite scenes of the characters' lives with animated sequences of memories of the past, hopes for the future, fantasies of the present, and dreams all created from information culled from interviews and dream diaries with the participants.

We aim for our project not only to be a film, but a community project that will serve as an educational resource and a communication hub for immigrants’ rights advocacy.

At the end of last year, Dreaming in American received a $10,000 grant from the Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media, a project of the Funding Exchange. Please help us keep up the FUND-RAISING MOMENTUM by donating to our project! Any amount you can give will get us closer to our goal of $236, 720. Even ten dollars will pay for one of the 60-minute digital video tapes we will be using to shoot the film.
