Today, in South Africa, over 5.5 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. Some estimates say that in 2007, there were 1,400,000 AIDS orphans in South Africa. Here in the United States, these vast numbers are almost unfathomable, and it is very difficult to comprehend the pervasiveness of this disease on the South Africa population.

 I have read articles, taken classes, even donated money to this cause. Yet, there is something very aloof and uninvolved about sitting in the comfort of my own home and just thinking about the crisis. I want to do something more. 

My goal for this trip is not only to try and make a difference in someone's life, but also so that I can understand the magnitude of the epidemic. To be able to see the conditions, to talk to the people, and to help in whatever small way I can - I may be educating others on HIV/AIDS but I do not doubt that I will learn something, too. I realize that there is no chance that I will be able to help even a fraction of those who need aid, but I hope that I will be able to share my experiences with others and create a greater awareness of a problem that affects so many.
