HOME IS WHEREVER YOU ARE is a mixed media documentary, following the 6000 mile journey of "The Apple Miner Colony", a young band comprised of more then twenty members from across the country, brought together by a common desire to play music. Their arsenal of instruments includes clarinets, flutes, mandolins, trumpets, drums, a violin, a cello, a musical saw, a tuba, electric and acoustic guitars, an ethereal chorus, a stand up bass, and a boundless amount of passionate creativity.
On May 17th 2008 the Apple Miner Colony will set out on a five-week tour of the United States. Over their journey they will trek from the southwest through the deep south, up the entire east coast and through the Midwest stopping at numerous small music clubs and house shows along the way. With the Apple Miner Colony there are no delusions of grandeur. The last show of the tour will be the band's last show ever, and, for many, the beginning of completely new chapters in their lives. The College of Santa Fe, which had brought them all together, is at present teetering on the edge of financial collapse, and will have to close for a time if not forever. Those that aren’t graduating will be forced to move elsewhere, effectively ending the world that had formed so many of them in thought and spirit. In this way, the tour has become a metaphor for the journeys we all take to find something worth living for. It represents the beauty of youth and the desire to pursue dreams and ideals that are all too often lost.
In order to represent this metaphor the documentary will flow between reality and fantasy. The reality, filmed in an intimate and verité style, is the story of individual struggles to find identity and purpose, of new friendships formed in venues and houses across the country and of having to face the harsh facts of a life in pursuit of artistic ideals. The fantasy, created by combining animation and abstract live action vignettes, seamlessly married by an overarching Quixotic myth, is the representation of the ideals and dreams of our youth; odes to an ineffable quality of life that seems to be the common pursuit of all humanity. The fusion of these two paradigms gives voice to our often-conflicting desires and realities, and through this juxtaposition the question arises as to whether it is possible to have a life that is both completely beautiful and real.
HOME IS WHEREVER YOU ARE is fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization that will receive grants on behalf of My Home Productions LLC, provide oversight to ensure that grant funds are used in accordance with grant agreements and provide reports as required by the grantor. Any profit seen by this project (from distribution or otherwise) will all (100%) be set aside for the creation of a non-profit arts collective designed to give young artists, musicians, and filmmakers avenues and means to collaborate and create equally if not more ambitious projects.
Please help us make this documentary by donating to our project! In order to make this project possible we will need to raise $27,994.Of course we realize that many people only have $10 to spare, but if 600 people gave us $10 each, that’s $6000, a quarter of our budget. Here are some examples of how donations could help.
• $5 would pay for a meal for one of our crew members
• $30 would buy a tank of gas
• $50 would pay for a 16GB SDHC Memory Card for our cameras
• $200 would buy a decent microphone
• $900 would pay for insurance.
• $4,000 would pay for 1 AVC-HD Panasonic Camera
• $5,000 or more will earn you a credit as "Associate Producer" of the film.
And if you’re too stretched for cash here’s a few other ways that you can help:
-As you can see equipment is expensive and comprises a large portion of our budget. So here’s another way you might be able to help. Let us know if you own any camera or sound equipment that you’d be willing to loan out for 5 weeks. Our insurance would fully cover any equipment used in the making of this documentary, so you’d be fully protected.
-If you’re living in or you are from any of the tour destinations we could also use your help. We still need help with booking some shows, nailing down places to stay and contacting local papers and radio stations. Click here www.myspace.com/appleminercolony for a list of cities and tour dates.
-Spread the word! Get involved! If you like the music or the concept behind the documentary, tell your friends, your family or even someone you’ve just met. The more people know about the Apple Miner Colony, the tour and the HOME IS WHEREVER YOU ARE documentary the better.
